BHA Position Statement – HBOT Indications

The internationally recognised list of hyperbaric indications established using Evidence Based Medicine and Consensus agreement of internationally recognised experts is regularly published by the ECHM and UHMS.

British Hyperbaric Association members use these internationally recognised lists of indications to select appropriate patients who may benefit from HBOT. Any patient with an indication from outside the list could be accepted only in the setting of a research study (with a protocol approved by an ethic committee) or in the setting of compassionate use which means that:

a) there is an acceptable scientific rationale

b) patient, referral physician(s) and third party payer (if any) have been extensively informed about potential risk and questionable benefit and still agree for HBO use

c) HBO treatment is offered at no cost for the patient.
